Create an AI API key and connect it to PMP

AI analyses are optional in PulseMyPortfolio, and they need a key you create yourself with the provider of your choice. It takes a few minutes, as long as you know where to look. Here is the path, from the account you sign in with to the test that confirms everything works.

Publisher: WM STUDIOS. Last updated: 3 September 2026. This page describes an operation inside a piece of software. It is neither investment advice nor tax advice.

Why your own key, rather than a subscription

An AI analysis runs on a language model, and that service has a cost. PulseMyPortfolio does not resell it: you open an account with the provider of your choice, create a key there, and pay for your usage directly, with no margin in between.

That choice has one pleasant consequence and one annoying one. The pleasant one: you can switch engines whenever you like, and several providers offer a trial tier. The annoying one: there is one more step before your first analysis. That step is what this page covers.

None of it is compulsory. Without a key the app still works: entry, quotes, valuation, performance, tax figures and the projection do not depend on it.

Three steps with the provider

Wording differs from one provider to the next, but the path is the same everywhere.

  1. Open the provider's console and sign in. From PulseMyPortfolio, the "Get a key" link on each provider card takes you straight there. Most consoles accept an account you already have, your email account for instance.
  2. Create a key, then copy it. Look for the page named "API keys". The key is shown once, as a long string of characters. Copy all of it, with no space before or after.
  3. Paste it into PulseMyPortfolio, then test. The screen is described just below. The test answers within seconds, which saves you from finding out about a problem in the middle of an analysis.

Some consoles ask you to create a project before they let you create a key. That is a formality, and the project name makes no difference to PulseMyPortfolio.

Each provider's terms, whether a trial tier exists, usage limits and prices all change regularly. This page therefore does not repeat them: they are on the provider's console, up to date by definition.

Where to paste it in the app

Open Settings, then the API & AI tab. Supported providers are listed as cards, each showing whether it needs a key and whether it can analyse images.

Click the card for the provider you want. A window opens, repeats the three steps above, offers the link to the console, then the field where the key goes. Save, and that provider becomes the one the app uses.

You can save several keys and switch between them at any time. Each is stored separately.

Your key does not travel through us. The publisher of PulseMyPortfolio runs no account server and keeps no user database: the key stays saved on your device and is used to talk directly to the provider you chose. That is also why a lost key is replaced at the provider, not with us.

If the test fails

The message shown comes from the provider, and it is more precise than it looks. Three causes cover the vast majority of cases.

  • The key was copied incompletely, or with a space stuck to the front or the back. This is by far the most common cause. Copy it again from the console, in one go.
  • The provider account is not active yet. Some consoles ask for a verification, or a short delay after creation, before the key answers.
  • The key was revoked or regenerated from the console. A replaced key stops working immediately, and the old one stays in the app until you replace it.

If the test succeeds but an analysis fails later, volume is usually the reason: most providers cap how many requests you can make over a period. The message says so, and you can then wait or switch to another provider you have already set up.

Choosing a provider

PulseMyPortfolio supports eleven of them, and the choice is yours. The app shows a usage marker for each one, without repeating any price: some offer a trial tier, others bill by consumption, and one runs entirely on your own machine, with no key and no connection.

If you are new to the tool, take the one the app offers by default, run a first analysis, and change later if the result does not suit you. Switching takes two clicks and erases no analysis you have already produced.
